IN LIGHT of the fire at The Edwards Bar (“Rock and ruin”, Herald 22/6) the thoughts of Newcastle’s East End residents in high-rise apartments must turn to question the present access of large firefighting vehicles to their homes in the case of that emergency. To alleviate these concerns, what are the present routes available that the fire authorities can use with such huge vehicles?

THE letter from Sarah Gaul (Letters 22/6) made my blood boil until I realised it was satire. Well done, Ms Gaul.

SO JIM Gardiner (Letters 21/6) would like to see the even-handed ABC sold off. Maybe that paragon of fairness, Murdoch, could buy it. Seems that unless you champion the Coalition, no matter what, you're biased against them. I believe I remember Jim talking about the national debt under Labor, but no mention now that his mob have doubled it. Good thing you're not biased, eh Jim?

THE withdrawal of the disintegrating bags from shops has brought my bank balance up. Now I take three reusable bags and fill them with only the things necessary. The butcher still uses them, so I now get meat and chicken from them. Cheaper too and a real person serves you. Happy shopping.

PAULINE Hanson qualified her support of the government tax bill by stating the battlers on low income need the help now, and that high income people will probably not really notice the increase. The problem is the low-income battlers won’t get anything before July 2019 when they claim it back in their income tax return. I expect those poor people with high incomes that won’t notice it will just have to wait until then as well.

I HAD a chuckle about the State Road Authority claiming a win after it finished work to fix an infamous traffic bottleneck six months earlier than originally planned (“Bottleneck fix finished”, Herald 23/6). If there had been a bit more forethought used when the first section was built, there would not have been any need to build a second.

WITH all the talk of cancer clusters at Williamtown I decided to take a look at my own relatives who are spread throughout NSW and what I found astounded me. Of 3 generations, 11 close relatives had 9 different cancers. So it is out there in its many different forms affecting thousands of families. Let’s hope that researchers will find a cure for all forms of cancer soon.

STOP press! That National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is ignorant of Steve Barnett's weather monitoring using his joints for global climate data at Fingal Bay (Short Takes 25/6). Mate, don't delay. Send them an email
