Lake Macquarie City Council has launched a new $15 million sports and recreation complex to serve the booming Cameron Park area.
The Pasterfield Sports Complex includes a skate park, playground, fields, netball courts, parkour area, fitness equipment, cricket nets and a 1km jogging and cycling path. It will be home to the Cardiff Hawks Australian rules and Cardiff-Boolaroo cricket clubs.
The complex was funded by mandatory developer contributions. Its 960-square metre playground has 68 pieces of equipment and a 6.5-metre climbing net.
Census data show Cameron Park piled on almost 3000 residents between 2011 and 2016, growing from 5166 people to 7995.
Its median age is just 32, 10 years below the Lake Macquarie median, and one in four of its residents is under the age of 14.
The complex will be opened officially at a family day from 10am to 2pm on Sunday which will include AFL and cricket clinics, skateboard demonstrations and other free activities.
The site is named after Geoff Pasterfield, Lake Macquarie’s first mayor after it was officially declared a city in 1984.
Pasterfield’s clubhouse and upstairs community centre are expected to open next month in time for the cricket season, along with a revamped BMX track at the southern end of the site.
