BYRON Bay band Skegss might appear like typical surfer or skate rats, but this three-piece possess an uncanny knack for melody. After releasing two mini albums, Skegss have produced their debut 15-track album, My Own Mess.
It’s anything but messy. While it’s typically lo-fi and uncomplicated the hooks are constant. Transaction Fee employs a catchy singalong chorus, while the opener Up In The Clouds bounces along with a sunny melody that would make The Shins proud.
Most of the album clings to surf-rock influences, yet Road Trip take a more folkie vibe and Margarita incorporates ’60s nostalgia and harmonies. My Own Mess suffers from lack of variety, but Skegss have made one damn catchy debut.
