
POLICE have charged a man after a service station at Shortland was robbed overnight.
About 11.40pm Monday a man entered the service station on Sandgate Road and threatened a male service attendant.
The man allegedly took cash and cigarettes and left the store.
The attendant notified authorities before going outside where he allegedly saw the offender counting the stolen money.
The man ran towards the attendant and there was a physical altercation, before he again fled the scene.
Officers from Newcastle City Police Area Command attended and a 30-year-old man was arrested. Police used OC spray to get control of the offender.
He was taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with aggravated robbery and two counts of resist police.
The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday.
