I FIND double standards with the new world order of political correctness every day. Aboriginal rugby league star Sam Thaiday’s statement that Cooper Cronk should see a witch doctor to overcome injury passed without comment from the politically correct brigades. I think the outrage would be off the Richter scale if, for instance, AFL commentator Sam Newman, who once wore black make up in a poor attempt at comedy, had ever suggested Aboriginal player Adam Goodes see a witch doctor. Apparently it's only white, successful middle-aged males that cause offence when it comes to breaking the holy code of leftist morality.

NEWCASTLE trams? What an absolute disgrace to Novacastrians. We have the skills to build them right here, but no, let’s import them from Spain? See how good they are when they break down, and how long we have to wait for parts to repair them.

REGARDING the students who claimed they were short shrifted by the principal of Francis Greenway High School (‘Girls told uniform length is making male staff ‘uncomfortable’’, Herald 28/9): the whole sorry saga would never have occurred, and the principal ridiculously accused, if the uniforms had complied with the school’s policy.

THE Asylum Seeker Resource Centre has appealed for funds to help convince our politicians to treat those sick children on Nauru with some humanity. What a farce! What a low level our government has sunk to, that one needs to lobby them on a matter of morality. Our Prime Minister claims to be a Christian, and stated in Parliament that his faith enjoined him to "… act with compassion and kindness, acknowledging our common humanity, and to consider the welfare of others ...". I am fully aware of the sidestepping arguments about "stopping the boats" and "destroying the people-smugglers' business model" and the tactic of outsourcing the responsibility for the actual conduct of detention centres, but do you think that God can be so easily fooled? Surely not.

THE Greater Newcastle Future Transport Plan 2056 (‘Tomorrow’s travel plan’, Herald 29/9)? Yep, that will be when we will probably see the next investment in transport infrastructure in Newcastle after the total cost of the latest fiasco is tallied.

THE NRL grand final is a farce. Compare it to the AFL where tradition has been maintained regardless of TV advertising revenue. The so-called experts should have a good hard look at themselves and give the game back to the people by having grand finals with a 3pm kick off on a Saturday. Is the NRL so cash-strapped that it has become the beggar to the media moguls? Don't get me going on the rule changes every season.
