Newcastle Socceroo Doug Wendt has died at the age of 91.
Wendt, a left-back, played several times for Australia, including one full international against South Africa, in the 1950s after starting his career with Adamstown, Police Boys and New Lambton in his home city.
He later played in Sydney with Auburn and Gladesville-Ryde.
Recognised as one of the best defenders of his era in Australia, he captained NSW and played for his state 20 times.
He was also an accomplished cricketer, representing Newcastle and NSW Country as a batsman before playing first-grade in Sydney.
The father of four died on February 1 in Sydney and his funeral was held last Friday.
