National breakfast TV show Sunrise made its way to Kurri Kurri on Tuesday to report the weather live from the home of the hair-raising event.

With competitors travelling from as far as Perth, an international section, and global media attention, the second annual Mulletfest is set to have the Chelmsford Hotel, and the town of Kurri Kurri for that matter, pumping all weekend.

And for those who think it's just a bit of fun … you're right. But there is a serious side to the iconic hairstyle and the competition.

Dan Brown, perhaps better known as Mullet Lord, is back as a judge again and he's not going to settle for any old hairdo as the winner of the categories of junior, ranga (red hair), vintage (over 60s), grubby, extreme, international and everyday mullet.

"I take mullets seriously in the most unserious way," he said. "All hail mullets."

He said general maintenance, split ends and whether the mullet has been washed were factors in his decision making as well as passion and personality under the hairdo.

"You've gotta own the mullet," he said.

Brown, who runs Lords Coffee and Associates in Beaumont Street, Hamilton, has had his recognisable hairstyle for seven years.

He said as a surfer, the do meant his hair didn't get in his eyes in the water and that he could enjoy the long lush locks as well as the "spiky sensation" on top.

"It's the best of both worlds," he said.

"I wash it twice a week, and as a surfer the salt water does wonders. It gives me this natural balayage which some people pay hundreds of dollars for."

Describing it as an honour to be invited back to judge again, Brown said he was excited to be back with his "tribe" on the weekend.

"I feel like the outcast walking down the street, but when I'm at Mulletfest the person without the mullet is the outcast," he said.

"If I didn't surf I'd live in Kurri."

Brown and fellow judges, last year's winner Shane "Shag" Hanrahan and Victoria's Laurie Manuel, will have their work cut out for them.

More than 100 people have entered the people's choice and entries into Mulletfest itself don't close until Friday.

The winner of each category will win a Visa gift card while the overall winner will score a free holiday.

The fun kicks off with a Beanies for Brain Cancer fundraising warm-up on Friday. The event's theme song, Party in the Back, will also be released on iTunes on Friday with profits going to the Mark Hughes Foundation.

Mulletfest starts at 9am Saturday.
