IT'S no accident that Dan Sultan chose to begin his stripped back album Aviary Takes with a cover of Michael Kiwanuka's Love & Hate. The opening lyrics, "Calling all the people here to see the show/Calling for my demons now to let me go," could have been written by Sultan himself after his train wreck performance in Cairns last year, which caused the ARIA winner to quit alcohol.

Elsewhere there's a reflective piano ballad version of Florence Welch's Dog Days Are Over and Gillian Welch’s Look At Miss Ohio, but mostly Aviary Takes is a re-interpretation of Sultan's extensive catalogue. Some tracks like Old Fitzroy experience minor changes, while others like Kingdom breathe with new vitality by being stripped bare. This is the reset Sultan needed.
