Mr Piper, who on Friday vented his frustration at the lack of consultation before the closure, issued a call to arms on Monday when he launched the petition.
"Following the disgraceful decision by the Office of Sport and Origin Energy to close Myuna Bay Sport and Rec centre on Friday, I've started a petition today and I hope you'll help me collect as many signatures as possible," he said in a statement.
"I believe the department's actions are extraordinary and a total betrayal of our local community.
"The petition calls for the urgent roepening of the Myuna Bay facility and calls on Origin Energy to take immediate action so that its ash dam and all of its other facilities pose no danger to community assets."
The Independent MP, who shaped as a key figure in the lead up to the March 23 election, is having a meeting with Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday afternoon.
Mr Piper has instructed the public to collect copies of the petition from his office, or to contact his office by phone or email to obtain copies electronically.
It comes after members of the Myuna Bay Waterski Club slammed the closure as a "knee-jerk reaction".
The centre was closed effectively immediately on Friday by the Office of Sport after Origin Energy raised concerns about the stability of its Eraring power station ash dam located nearby.
The Office of Sport shut the centre while an international water-skiing competition was being held, forcing officials, competitors and their families off-site midway through the week-long event.
Dozens of staff have also been impacted by the closure.
