A NSW Police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the beach about 12.20pm on Easter Sunday after a man believed to be aged in his 40s was pulled from the surf.
Surf Life Saving NSW state duty operations controller Andrew Ugarte said the man had been surfing in choppy conditions about 75 metres from the beach, which was closed at the time.
"He was seen struggling in the water with his surfboard and was brought back to the beach by life savers on a rescue board," Mr Ugarte said.
"Life savers performed CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] at the water's edge and attempted to revive him using the club's defibrillator. Soon after, the ambulance arrived."
A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said three crews were called and took over from the life savers.
"We worked on him for quite some time, over 30 minutes, but he was declared deceased at the scene."
One witness told the Newcastle Herald he saw the man being put on a stretcher, which was lifted onto a buggy.
He said about eight people kept the stretcher stable and walked alongside the buggy as it was driven across the sand to an ambulance.
The police spokesperson said officers from Newcastle City Police District commenced inquiries and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
The spokesperson said there were no suspicious circumstances and the man was believed to have suffered a medical episode.
