About 3.30pm Sunday emergency services were called to Villiers Street to reports of a car crash. On arrival they found a 79-year-old man had been hit by a vehicle as he walked down the street.
According to witnesses the impact propelled the elderly man into a nearby stormwater drain. The man suffered serious injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
The driver then fled the scene, leaving nearby residents to contact police.
Family members of the 79 year old took to social media to appeal for the public's help to find the driver.
Later that day a 17-year-old boy handed himself in at Waratah police station. He was charged with five offences, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact occasioning grievous bodily harm, cause bodily harm by misconduct and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail to face a Children's Court on Monday.
