Police and paramedics were sent to the intersection of Hanbury Street and Maitland Road, Mayfield, just before 4.30pm on Wednesday after reports of a three-vehicle crash.
An Ambulance NSW spokesman told the Newcastle Herald two people involved in the crash had been cleared of any obvious injuries and paramedics were assessing an elderly woman in one of the cars.
He said she was not trapped in the vehicle, but remained inside because it was easier for paramedics to assess her there.
NSW Live Traffic warned motorists to allow extra travel time as occupants of the vehicles are assessed and the scene is cleared.
