The Magpies retained top spot, moving to 40 points, with one round left in the NNSW NPL after a late surge downed a 10-man Rosebud at Adamstown Oval.
Adamstown frustrated Maitland until Matt Keogh was given a straight red card for a last-man challenge on Joel Wood in the 61st minute.
Andrew Swan (69th minute), Wood (75th) and Nick Cowburn (86th) scored to put Maitland two points ahead of Edgeworth and in the premiership box seat.
"We've been doing it for a few weeks now," coach Mick Bolch said of the strong finish. "It's never easy against Adamstown. I think they've lost 12 games by one goal. They are always in the game, they make it a contest, they make it a scrap."
Adamstown (11 points), who have the final bye, will finish last after Valentine and Lake Macquarie drew 0-0 on Sunday to move to 12.
Thompson left the pitch in the 33rd minute with lower-back spasms, while James Thompson limped off in the 77th after a foul challenge. Bolch was confident both would be right for next Sunday's crucial match. Tom Davies and Mat Swan (hamstring) were missing on Sunday and could return against the Jets, who lost 5-0 to Broadmeadow on Saturday.
Bolch, though, was wary of the Jets Youth.
"Who's coming in next week? You just don't know."
Kale Bradbery scored a brace for Broadmeadow at Magic Park.
Mitch Oxborrow knocked in a free kick.
Kristian Brymora and Jeremy Wilson also scored for a Magic side missing James Virgili (groin), Ryan Ensor (suspended) and Andrew Hoole (foot).
At Jack McLaughlan Oval on Saturday, a double from Aden Gardner and goal from Josh Rose with a corner kick were the highlights as Edgeworth defeated Weston 4-1.
Regan Lundy gave Weston hope with a goal to make it 2-1 in the 70th minute but the Eagles finished with Rose's goal and Gardner's second.
Adam Cawley had put the Eagles ahead 2-0 after Gardner's free kick opened the scoring.
