The man, now 65, who cannot be named because it might identify the alleged victims, has not entered any pleas to 20 charges, including six counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with a person between the age of 10 and 14 and six counts of aggravated indecent assault - victim under the age of 16.
The matter was adjourned to Newcastle Local Court on June 1, when the man is again excused from attending. Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad detectives say they launched an investigation in September last year after receiving information that two young girls had been indecently and sexually assaulted by a man while they were in his care.
Detectives allege the man assaulted the girls, then aged between eight and 10, on a number of occasions while he was caring for them between 2002 and 2004. The man was arrested in March and later granted bail.
