The home had been rented for nearly 20 years when they bought it in 2006.
"There wasn't a window in the house that wasn't broken or cracked, it was pretty horrendous," Adam said. "It was in a condition that no one wanted to touch it."
But they saw potential in the location and, after a quick tidy up, lived in the original home for six years to get a feel for the best parts of the site. The "heart and soul" of the property was an old Oak tree out the back, which has been preserved.

"We spent a lot of time talking to different people and conceptualising then did the renovation over two years, in stages," Adam said.
It was "not your average renovation" and the result is telling. The four-bedroom residence presents as a striking architectural redesign of space, light and environmental sustainability. It spans a north-facing 768 square metre block and offers a relaxed beachside lifestyle.
A huge, north-facing window above the front door draws light into the centre of the building and penetrates through to the back of the home. There are ocean views from most rooms with windows thoughtfully placed to not only capture the sea breezes but to frame the landscape.
Each room has its own design feature. Artificial turf lines the hallway and has been both practical and a talking point. It is "a bit playful" and sets the tone for the house. One of the bedrooms has a built-in mezzanine and another a Juliet balcony cantilevered over the yard. In the upstairs master retreat, frameless floor-to-ceiling glass that allows for unobstructed views makes a bold statement.
Family living and dining areas revolve around an ethanol fireplace and the gourmet kitchen is appointed with Neff appliances and breakfast bar.
Two luxe bathrooms are finished with feature tiling and heated floors. There is Tongue n Groove engineered European oak flooring, a 15kW Fronius solar power system, rear-lane access to a separate double garage as well as a single garage under the house and a large lawn leads to a private deck with built-in spa.
The property is within walking distance of Redhead beach, Redhead Public School and Webb Park playground.
Matt Barnes, of Richardson & Wrench, has listed 6 Beach Road with a guide of $2 million to $2.2 million. It is set for auction on November 22 and will be open Saturday at 11.30am.
