The 'public place' shooting happened just before 2am Tuesday with one gun shot fired through the window of a home on Platt Street.
Three adults and three children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but no injuries have been reported.
Police have established a crime scene, which will be examined by specialist forensic officers.
As part of ongoing inquiries, police are urging anyone who may have information about the incident to contact Newcastle police station.
