It is the third time the Robinson Property agent has sold the landmark property which features a Californian-style mansion astride a 2333-square-metre block with panoramic city and ocean views. It has eight bedrooms, four bathrooms and a large in-ground swimming pool.
Australian Property Monitors data shows he sold it for $3.6 million in December 2007 then $4.5 million in November 2015.
This time it was marketed with a guide of $5.8 million and attracted international and interstate interest before being secured by a local family.
"We had quite a few parties interested," Mr Bender told the Newcastle Herald.
"We had parties from overseas and interstate that had interest but it ended up home-town people who got it. It's a stunning place.
"To get land of that size and location is rare, and the view is the best. You don't get little bits of it, you get the whole panorama."
It joined an exclusive club of Merewether homes to reach the $6 million mark. Robinson Property sold a seven-bedroom residence at 10 Ocean Street for $6.15 million in September last year.
In the same month, a Newcastle record sale came when PRD Newcastle and Lake Macquarie negotiated the $7.25 million result for a four-bedroom house at 38 John Parade. Street Property then sold a four-bedroom home at 6 Ocean Street in October last year for $6 million.
The Merewether mansion was not the only property Mr Bender sold this month that he has sold multiple times before.
He also reported the quick sale of a three-bedroom weatherboard home at 12 Newcastle Street, Mayfield for $816,900. It was positioned on a block 409 square metres in size with dual frontage to Little Street into a double garage with workshop.
Mr Bender had previously sold the home for $75,000 in 1990, $98,000 in 1993 and $110,000 in 1999.
"That one was on the market for a week and I had around 19 offers on it," Mr Bender said.
According to APM data, the median house sale price for Mayfield was $485,000 for 206 sales in 2016. Last year it was $601,500 for 198 sales. This year, the median is $737,500 for the first 72 sales, including the suburb record $1.53 million paid for 24 Barton Street.
Belle Property Newcastle have sold a four-bedroom residence surrounded by landscaped gardens and backing onto reserve at 8 Ardlessa Way in New Lambton Heights ahead of its auction, which was scheduled for today.
The sale price was undisclosed but the Herald understands it was above $1.6 million.
