It is understood the amount of seaweed being washed ashore is related to several storm events in recent weeks.
The Wandiyali Classic, held on Wednesday, was the first event of Surfest and was followed by the Surfest Pro Junior on Thursday.
Competitors at both events have reported being covered in seaweed.
A Newcastle City Council spokeswoman said the beach would be cleaned of seaweed and looking pristine by Thursday afternoon.
The council will also clean the Merewether Ocean Baths.
The Surfest main event begins on Monday.
