More than 600 Mayfield West Demonstration School students and 400 from various Hunter Schools got their feet shuffling at Newcastle Foreshore and at Charlestown Square at 12.30pm.
The students were all taught the same dance and seemed to appear from nowhere to conduct an impromptu performance.
Flashmobs were at 45 locations across the state including Martin Place in Sydney.
Education Week activities in the Hunter include open days, school musicals, performing arts events, art exhibitions and NAIDOC Day events at schools across the region.
