The council has been lauded by locals and visitors for its wrack removal at Canton Beach, in Tuggerah Lake.
The sandy lake bed is again far more noticeable – and enticing – at the popular beach.
“Staff have certainly done a wonderful job at this location and the work hasn’t gone unnoticed by the community,” mayor Doug Eaton said.
“What we observed over the Christmas and New Year holiday period was a marked increase in the use of the Canton Beach foreshore reserve by the community.’’
Since August, a total of 730 tonnes of wrack was removed from the lake and taken to Buttonderry Waste Management Facility.
“While our staff are currently focusing their efforts on Tuggerah Lake, the contractor will be undertaking the majority of their work in Budgewoi Lake and Lake Munmorah over the next month,’’ Cr Eaton said.
Last year, the council removed 5800 cubic metres of wrack from the shore zone next to recreational areas which would otherwise have decomposed in the lake, affecting water quality and contributing to the formation of organic black ooze.
The council would increase the wrack harvesting locations and volume during 2014, Cr Eaton said.
