A Daly Cherry-Evans field goal with two seconds remaining in last Monday's match against the Manly Sea Eagles broke the Knights' poise during a horror week for the club.
The 15-14 loss - the Knights' eighth in 10 games - came at a tumultuous time for Newcastle's NRL franchise as owner Nathan Tinkler teetered on his decision to relinquish control of the club.
Tinkler announced last Friday he would hand back the team to the Knights members' club.
The decision came amid reports that Tinkler had left Newcastle with a $20 million debt.
While he did not clarify how much debt the club was in, Tinkler said it would need to be settled before he formally handed back the club.
The Newcastle Knights had a bye during last week's 11th round of the NRL season.
They will play the New Zealand Warriors this Sunday, June 1, at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland.
