NINE young and talented Westlakes sportspeople were among 20 Hunter athletes to be awarded Local Sporting Championship Grants in a presentation ceremony hosted by Member for Charlton Pat Conroy.
The $500 government grants are for young sportsmen and women who are competing at a state or national level.
"These grants are a boost for young athletes and their families who are often required to pay for travel, accommodation, equipment and uniforms to compete in their chosen sport," Mr Conroy said.
"We have some very talented young sportspeople in our area and I'm really impressed by the achievements of each of these grant recipients.
"I am also looking forward to hearing of their future success, including those who are representing Lake Macquarie in the International Children's Games later this year."
The grant will help Bonnells Bay athletics star Emma-Sue Greentree, who travelled all over the country to compete in various events, including the Australian Athletics Championships in Melbourne, and the the Junior and Youth Athletics Championships in Sydney.
Fellow Bonnells Bay resident and tennis hotshot Cooper Griffiths also received a grant.
Cooper recently returned from Darwin, where he competed in the NSW Primary School Sports Association Bruce Cup, losing only one of his matches and helping the NSW team to finish fourth.
Coal Point swimmer Jade Frith was another recipient. She regularly travels to Sydney Olympic Park to compete.
In this year's Swimming NSW State Age Championships, Jade competed in five events and was a finalist in them all.
She took out the bronze medal in the 400 metre individual medley.
Other Westlake athletes to receive the grant include Marmong Point triathlete Sarah Gardner, Coal Point sailor James Robson, Boolaroo swimmer Jacob Sansom, Kilaben Bay athlete Dakota Thomas and Awaba basketballer Brooke Rowsthorne.
