The knockout tournament on November 22 pits eight of Oceania’s top cruiserweights against each other in three three-minute rounds on the undercard of Shane Cameron and Kali Meehan’s World Boxing Association Oceania heavyweight title fight.
Ammann’s opponents in the tournament include Kiwi kickboxing champion Israel Adesanya, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Brad “Hollywood” Pitt, Aussie Anthony ‘‘Bull’’ McCracken, New Zealand cruiserweight champion Monty Filimaea, Kiwi Lance Bryant and unbeaten Samoan Vaitele Soi.
The carrot for the winner is $150,000 and a shot at the World Boxing Organisation Asia Pacific and WBA Pan African cruiserweight titles, which are held by Kiwi David Aloua.
Aloua will defend his titles against Coffs Harbour’s Daniel Baff on the November 22 card.
Aloua has one blemish on his 11-bout career, a unanimous points loss to Ammann over 10 rounds in 2013.
It has been a disappointing year for Ammann.
The 31-year-old two-time former Australian cruiserweight champion has lost his only two fights in 2014 against Tony Conquest in London and Mark Flanagan in Townsville.
His trainer, Peter Hallett, said the new concept might be what the southpaw needed.
‘‘I think it’ll suit him because it’ll make Daniel come out more aggressive,’’ Hallett said.
‘‘He’s aggressive once he gets going, but usually he’s more of a laid-back fighter.
‘‘This will make him step up.’’
