Engineers are investigating focusing on the condition and construction of the existing sea wall, as well as the area adjacent to the Bogey Hole.
An assessment of the cliff above the road will also be undertaken as part of the works.
The investigations have forced the closure of sections of King Edward Park from Garside Gardens pathway in King Edward Park to the Bogey Hole and north to the shade shelter and access stairs at South Newcastle for up to two weeks.
