The Heritage Council awarded the money to the Awabakal Local Aboriginal Land Council to prevent more water seepage in the historic building.
The money will be used to enable the building's gutters and drains to be cleared of debris, and for holes in the roof to be fixed.
The Awabakal council had previously estimated that it would cost $20 million to fix up the building and restore it to a usable state.
