The Sixers posted 9-101 at Penrith’s Howell Oval before West Indian import, Stafanie Taylor (59 off 38 balls), smashed nine boundaries and one six to power the Thunder to a nine-wicket win in 13.2 overs.
Bates played a major role in the historic win by opening the bowling and dismissing Southern Stars batter Alyssa Healy for 14 at 1-19.
The ACT Meteors recruit finished with figures of 1-17 off two overs.
Maitland leg-spinner Maisy Gibson was not selected in the Thunder’s XI.
A crowd of 1000 turned out for the first WBBL game in Sydney.
Local fans were rewarded for their support when 17-year-old Penrith product Lauren Cheatle starred with 4-20 off four overs, including the wicket of South African international and top-scorer Marizanne Kapp (21).
