“Breeders will vigorously oppose a Dartbrook open cut mine because of its likely impact on a number of signature stud farming properties in the neighbouring Segenhoe Valley,” spokesman Henry Plumptre said.
“The mine will sit directly west of the Valley, less than five kilometers from thoroughbred nurseries, where the prevailing westerly winds will blow a constant stream of coal and blasting dust down the valley.”
Studs include Darley, Newgate, Arrowfield, Vinery and Kia Ora.
Hunter Valley Thoroughbred Breeders Association successfully fought the Drayton South mine. A NSW Planning Assessment Commission panel accepted the breeder’s case that open cut coal mining and international scale studs are incompatible land uses and cannot co-exist in close proximity.
