THE former RAAF flying boat base at Rathmines deserves more respect than what Lake Macquarie City Council is showing.

Council ignores this site, which is of concern to local residents.
In 1962/63 Council purchased the 100-acre site from the Department of Interior, probably with the intention of developing it, judging by the submission plan indicating a subdivision of 291 lots.
The subsequent plan of management for the site stopped this. The description states: “...bushland and of cultural signficance and for the community use...”.
Today, this area is overgrown with bush waste and weeds. It is not cared for – there is no waste removal, grass mowing, road maintenance, or attention to the slipway.
For seven years the public endeavoured to maintain a safety and clearway for walking, but was stopped from using unemployed or community workers, despite them being insured.
It’s time council came clean with its intentions for this public area.
The plan of management appears not to have been implemented.
We deserve an explanation, and not simply excuses about finances not being available, and next year’s budget.
It takes only four minutes 30 seconds to run a slasher from end to end. So 10 runs of the slasher would take less than 45 minutes to mow the grass there.
Does it really take 53 years for council to decide what it wants to do?
