Mr Jeans’ tenure will now run to June 30 2021.
He has held the role at the University of Newcastle since July 2013.
The fourth-generation Novocastrian said he was humbled to retain the position for a second term.
“The University of Newcastle is pivotal to the future prosperity of our regions,” Mr Jeans said.
“I see it as a great privilege to lead the University’s Council and to have the opportunity to maximise the University’s contribution to improving equity and excellence for our students and creating a more prosperous future for all through the generation and application of leading research and innovation.”
The chancellor’s second term officially begins July 1 next year.
