The entire men’s competition was delayed 24 hours with all 36 surfers, including 10-time champion Russ Molony and Mullumbimby’s Bawoo Cockatoo, now hitting the water from 7.30am.
They will be joined, after 2pm, by finalists in the women’s, junior and longboard categories following heats on Thursday.
Port Kembla siblings Summer and Taj Simon are both in the running for titles while Jasmine McCorquodale will look to back up her high school win with Tuggerah Lakes at the same venue on Wednesday.
The longboard top four includes former world tour surfer Rob Page and Shelly Beach’s Matt Molony.
Meanwhile four local boardriders clubs – Bay Area, Frenchmans, Newcastle East End and Redhead – will go head-to-head at Newcastle Beach from 9am on Friday to gain late entry into the main Australian Boardriders Battle draw this weekend.
