The exhibition, in partnership with support group Rainbow Visions Hunter, opens on Saturday at 3pm.
Rainbow Visions spokesman Ivan Skaines said the exhibition, titled Labelled Queer, highlighted the depth of talent in the Hunter's gay community.
"We are very excited about the exhibition," Mr Skaines said.
"It will showcase various labels, both positive and negative, given to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people over the years."
Gallery cultural director Joe Eisenberg said the exhibition was the gallery's third that focused on a specific group within the Hunter community.
"It is part of the gallery's role to support and encourage artists from across our diverse community," he said.
The exhibition runs until February 21.
