Born Dante Givens, Akil will perform at Fannys on November 17, promoting his solo album Sound Check.
Jurassic 5, from the US, are icons of the international hip-hop scene with a huge Australian following.
They played their last-ever gig together in Sydney before breaking up in February 2007.
‘‘It’s a big coup, particularly in hip-hop circles, that he’s coming down to Australia and even bigger that he’s decided to make a stop in Newcastle,’’ a Fannys spokeswoman said yesterday.
Jurassic 5 were best known for their albums Quality Control (2000), Power in Numbers (2002) and Feedback (2006), and singles such as Quality Control, W.O.E. Is Me (World of Entertainment), What’s Golden, If You Only Knew and Work It Out.
After splitting from Jurassic 5, Akil has taken what he learned from the group and gone solo.
He is touring Europe, drawing rave reviews for his sold-out shows across England, Ireland, Norway and Scotland.
