Newcastle Rebels downed NRRRL in the opening round of the Ladies Leaguetag NSW Country Championships played in Wauchope over the weekend.
The Rebels led 14-4 at the break then added another 22 points in the second half to win 36-4.
Grace Gallagher, Emily Coppins and Angela Jones all scored first-half tries and Newcastle always held the lead.
In the second period, Rhianni Cipta scored two tries and Jordan Glanville, Gallagher and Sophie Higgins all crossed the line for a four-pointer.
The Lakes United match against South Newcastle was deferred until May 16 due to a number of players being away on representative duties with the Rebels over the weekend.
The rescheduled Lakes-Souths match on Tuesday kicks off at 6.15pm.
Kurri Kurri defeated Maitland Pickers 36-6 in their Newcastle Ladies Leaguetag challenge on Saturday and Western Suburbs were too strong for Macquarie, winning 62-0.
WPL: Buds get a roll on
Adamstown twice came from behind before clinching a 3-2 win over South Wallsend with a controversial penalty in the dying stages in Herald Women’s Premier League at Adamstown Oval on Sunday.
The win came at the end of a testing two-and-a-half week period, in which Rosebud played five games, suffered some of their biggest losses in WPL history and had former coach Ben Herron hand in his resignation.
But they seized third place on the league ladder on Sunday with a character-building win on home turf.
The game was just two minutes old when Georgia Amess gave the visitors a 1-0 lead but Emily Frost put the hosts back on level terms midway through the first half.
Former W-League player Stacey Day put the Wolves back in front in the 55th minute when she scored into the bottom right corner from around the penalty spot.
The Wolves seemed to have the ascendancy across the park until Elodie Dagg was given a chance and took it, scoring with a screamer from outside the 18-yard box in the 70th minute.
Dagg again proved the heroine when she calmly slotted from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining after Isobel Cootes was felled on the edge of the box.
South Wallsend coach Gary Wilson felt the Wolves were hard-done by with the penalty and was disappointed not to get anything out of the game.
The Wolves back up against Wallsend on Wednesday night.
Merewether beat the Red Devils 1-0 on Sunday and Warners Bay defeated Thornton 7-0.
Basketball: Hunters big win
Defending Waratah Basketball League women’s champions Newcastle monstered Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 85-62 at Northern Beaches Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday, completing a 61-point turn-around in the space of a fortnight.
Newcastle’s emphatic 23-point victory came just two weeks after Manly had humbled the Hunters 90-52 at Broadmeadow.
Five-time Women’s National Basketball League MVP Suzy Batkovic, who missed the game against Manly on April 29, poured in 41 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and handed off four assists.
Captain Alison Ebzery was another stand-out for Newcastle, registering a 13-point, 11-rebound, 10-assist triple double. Nineteen-year-old Ebzery also had two steals and two blocked shots.
Emily Keith supported Batkovic and Ebzery with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals as Newcastle (3-5) snapped a three-game losing streak with their most complete performance of the season.
“Revenge is sweet. It was a great team win at both ends of the court,” Newcastle coach Mark Gledson said.
“Our scoring was attributable to us getting the ball through hands and putting the defence out of position for easy scores. The most pleasing aspect was our team defence starting to work as one.”
BDAFL: Big guns keep winning
Newcastle City, Gosford, Nelson Bay, Warners Bay, Maitland and Killarney Vale all recorded wins in round six of Black Diamond Women’s AFL on Saturday.
