Police said about 6pm a woman left her Tooke Street home for a short time through a side door, closing it behind her to keep her son inside.
When she returned she found the door open and was told by her son that a man had left the door open.
A short search of the house revealed a thief had stolen an iPhone and a Nintendo game console.
Senior Constable Tony Tamplin said it appeared the five-year-old confronted the offender in the home before he ran off with the items.
The boy described the man as being of average height, slim, fair and clean shaven. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
