The exhibition features the works of Alison Smith, Ahn Wells and Caelli Jo Brooker and its title refers to the fact all three work in the arts industry outside of their individual art practises, that is their shared condition.
Smith works primarily in printmaking and photo-media and has 22 woodcut print works in the exhibition.
The works pick up on themes from works Smith created for their last joint exhibition in 2016.
“They are abstracts … I am interested in photographing buildings in construction,” she said.
“The changing landscape of Newcastle through the major infrastructure projects that are happening.
“That work used imagery I had took during the construction of the NEWspace building and the law courts and new apartments.
“For this series ... I had a lot of those lines, patterns and imagery in my head. I have sat down and looked at that and taken it to a more abstract level.”
Wells has six works in the show, including three mixed-media paintings, two sculptures and one work on paper.
“My works is never about a subject as such but more about light and shade, and order and disorder, or finding the order out of the disorder,” she said. “It’s always about the texture, finding that harmony between two different textures.
“A lot of it is about intuitively making .. and playing with new materials.
“I have always found the more you use something new to make a work, it pushes you to make another work.
“And that’s how you make interesting, new and different work.”
The works of Brooker explore personal discourse surrounding consumption, recycling, symbol and materialism.
The works of the three are tied together through the use of monochrome colour palate and the strong use of lines.
Conditional is on at Acrux Gallery, 123 Tudor Street, Hamilton until November 24.
