The school was one of the just 81 NSW schools and 330 schools nationally to have been identified by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to have achieved above-average gains in reading and/or numeracy achievement, as measured by the 2017 NAPLAN tests.
Principal Nick Walker said to be recognised by ACARA in this way, and to be included in such a select group, was a well-deserved honour for the school community.
“It is a strong affirmation for the dedication exhibited by all staff members in striving to provide the children in their care with a high-quality and engaging learning environment,” he said.
Mr Walker said a number of factors had contributed to the results.
These included the school’s focus on explicit instruction, the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program in primary classes, and the Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN) program in kindergarten and Stage One classes.
Other contributing factors included the intervention and support programs linked to the Powerful Learning Accountable Teaching (PLAT) program, the increased collaboration between teachers and sharing of best practice, along with a strong focus on student wellbeing and a kindergarten transition program, he said.
Mr Walker said while these initiatives had contributed to the result, it was the professionalism of teachers and support staff at the school that was key to the school’s success.
“I congratulate and thank all staff members on behalf of the parents, carers and students in the RPS community,” he said.
