ELTON John is among music’s most influential artists, so it’s not surprising a modern re-imagining of his material has attracted big admirers. Miley Cyrus, Pink, The Killers, Coldplay, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga – it’s a who’s who. Naturally there’s hits and misses.
Cyrus soars in her slightly country cover of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me and Smith’s version of Daniel perfectly captures the heartbreak of the original. Pink and US rapper Logic combine for Bennie And The Jets and it’s a train wreck. While Pink’s contribution is fine, Logic’s rap and slow dub-beats fail miserably.
Sheeran also lacks the gravitas to sing Candle In The Wind. It almost sounds like he’s blushing as he sings, “Marilyn was found in the nude.”
