Benjamin Robert Wein, 36, did not come up from the Newcastle courthouse cells or enter any pleas during a brief mention of his matter on Wednesday.
Mr Wein was arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and destroy or damage property after emergency services were called to a unit on Fowler Street about 9.30am on Tuesday. Police said they found a badly injured 59-year-old man inside. He was treated for serious head injuries and taken to John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition, police said. Police launched an investigation and arrested Mr Wein at the unit block later on Tuesday.
Police said their initial inquiries suggested the two men know each other.
