Newcastle Airport was awash in the green and gold to welcome home our Commonwealth Games athletes yesterday.
“It was an honour to welcome some of our homegrown athletes on their return from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.” the Airport’s Facebook post read.
“You've made us proud and are all Champions in our eyes.”
The 2018 Commonwealth Games, held at the Gold Coast, concluded on Sunday with the closing ceremony, for which Hamilton’s homegrown champion Kurt Fearnley bore the Australian flag after a stunning gold medal performance in the T54 marathon that morning.
“(The Games) has been the most inclusive event that our nation has ever hosted. We can’t let anything distract from that,” Fearnley tweeted after the closing ceremony was heavily critiisised for not showing the footage of the athletes in the stadium on Sunday.
“We did something special on the Gold Coast & it was one of the best weeks of my life.”
