A KOALA hospital will be established in Port Stephens, with the NSW government announcing $3 million for the initiative on Sunday.

Releasing the government's long-awaited Koala Strategy, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said $45 million would go towards protecting the state's drastically dwindling koala population and towards studying why their numbers continued to decline.
“This unprecedented action is the first part of a long-term investment by the NSW Liberal and Nationals government that will guarantee koalas have a very bright future in this state,” Ms Berejiklian said.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said on social media that Port Stephens would receive $3 million as part of the strategy.
Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington welcomed the announcement.
“I want to congratulate and thank the volunteers at Port Stephens Koalas for their hard work and dedication over many years, as well as their incredible advocacy for the plight of our local koala population,” Ms Washington said.
“None of this would be possible without the volunteers. They give so generously of their time and energy to protect our local koalas from extinction. The koala hospital will support them and their important work.”
