The Mark Hughes Foundation expects to topple last year’s sales following Beanie for Brain Cancer round in the National Rugby League.
At matches throughout NSW, Queensland and in New Zealand, players, fans and officials embraced the beanies in the second edition of the dedicated round.
That was no more evident than in Newcastle yesterday during the Knights and Sharks clash at Beanies For Brain Cancer Stadium.
The ground was temporarily renamed midweek courtesy of McDonald Jones Homes relinquishing their naming rights for the round.
“It’s been a wonderful weekend, it’s so powerful when you just feel like the whole NRL community is one behind you,” Mark Hughes told ABC Grandstand Radio.
“From Todd Greenberg and the NRL, to the fans, to the media, and most importantly to the players and coaches who have got right behind it.
“It’s just so special to see people walking around in beanies. I really want to go up and shake hands with every one of them.
“I’m so grateful that people are buying into our cause.”
Even at grassroots level, clubs were showing their support of the concept with the Wests Rosellas Ladies League Tag team donning the beanies at their game.
In the four years before the weekend’s round, the Mark Hughes Foundation had raised over $5 million to fund research into brain cancer.
