UPDATE, 9.58am: A man, armed with a knife, entered a service station on Patrick Street on Friday, just after 7.30am, and threatened a staff member before stealing cash and cigarettes and fleeing the store.
Several Newcastle Police crews were called to the scene earlier this morning, where officers established a crime scene.
No one was injured during the robbery.
Investigators have said they wish to speak with a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.
He has been described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm tall, and was last seen wearing a grey hooded jumper and dark-coloured pants.
