NEWCASTLE Herald cartoonist Peter Lewis has described winning the 30th Rotary Cartoon Awards’ Political Theme category as “pretty special” and “verifies the work”.
Lewis’ winning cartoon was published on February 17 and shows MP Barnaby Joyce falling from a high horse.
“He was such a hypocrite and satire is there to unmask all hypocrites,” he said.
“He’s a living example of what not to do in your political and personal life.”
Lewis said the concept came to him fairly quickly and took an hour to draw and another to colour in.
“The judges were going for a laugh this year and wanted to get a chortle – and apparently they got it.
“It’s an endorsement – you live a strangely isolated life, so to see your work being appreciated and the audience clapping was a really pleasant experience.”
