THE coastal areas of the Hunter were soaked on Monday with many suburbs recording between 60 and 80 millimetres of rain.
The downpour continued into the night as a trough moved through the region.
“We have seen large parts of the coast receive rainfall, but it has been a case of some parts receiving much more than others,” the Bureau of Meteorology’s Craig Ryan said.
“It hasn’t extended inland, not even as far as Maitland which only recorded eight millimetres of rain in the last 24 hours.”
While the Upper Hunter, which is in desperate need of rain to help break the drought, did not receive much rainfall, it was a different story in Newcastle and Port Stephens.
Some of the biggest downfalls in the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday were recorded in:
- Broadmeadow – 70 millimetres
- Adamstown – 62 millimetres
- Nobbys Head – 5 millimetres
- Williamtown – 34 millimetres
“We are expecting it to continue today, but the coastal trough will weaken into tomorrow,” Mr Ryan said.
“We are hopeful those further inland may receive more rain today, but we can’t promise anything.”
