Around 80 protestors gathered on Industrial Drive at the corner of George Street around 8am, where they displayed placards to drivers before speakers took up the microphone. 

The IPCC special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 degrees celsius  was commissioned as part of the Paris agreement in 2016.

The report’s forecast calls for urgent action to phase out fossil fuels as the world is nowhere near on track to avoid warming beyond the 1.5 degree target, protest organisers have said.

Protestors have called on will Prime Minister Scott Morrison to honour the Paris Climate Agreement and Australia’s part in this international effort to cut global carbon emissions.

“We know everyone cares about the future for the next generation. We know we have the renewable energy solutions for a clean and sustainable future. We must come together to build a positive community – of crisis, of hope and of action,” Organiser Elle Lawless said.

“There is still time to avoid the most catastrophic climate impacts – if we act now. We must join together and demand our elected representatives stand up against the fossil fuel lobby and legislate effective climate policies.”
