Members of the Clergy Abuse Network gathered on the site on Sunday evening to symbolically mark the project’s beginning.
“It will be quite a significant structure and certainly a significant event in the lives of the survivors, victims no longer with us and their families,” network founder Bob O'Toole said.
Mr O'Toole said the memorial would be accessible and visible from the street, with backlighting.
It will include a 1.5-metre circular wall, garden and private area of reflection.
“It’ll be a perpetual reminder of the tragedies that occurred there,” Mr O'Toole said.
The project is being jointly funded by Marist Brothers and the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.
The memorial itself is planned to be unveiled on March 27.
The former Marist school site now contains St Francis Xavier’s College.
