The announcement about the club's back-up goalkeeper was made on Thursday morning.
The former Wellington Phoenix player has notched up four appearances during his debut campaign for the Jets in 2018-19 with Glen Moss the No.1 option for Newcastle.
"Lewis possesses some great attributes as a goalkeeper," Newcastle coach Ernie Merrick told Jets media.
"He's come a long way since I coached him last [at the Phoenix], maturing as player and bringing consistency to his performance in training and during games.
"[Goalkeeping coach] Chris Bowling has been doing an excellent job with our 'keepers and Lewis is reaping the rewards of plenty of hard work over the last 6 months.
"I'm really glad to have someone of Lewis' character around the group for another season, he's been a great addition to our squad."
The Perth-born 28-year-old said his decision to stay in the Hunter region was the right fit for him both on and off the field.
"Ernie and Lawrie gave me a chance at the start of this season and it's an opportunity I was determined to grab with both hands," Italiano told Jets media.
"Working with Chris [Bowling] and the team has been great for my development and I'm excited to continue that next season.
"My wife and I are expecting our first child in June and we're really enjoying our time in Newcastle, so securing my future was important for both of us."
