But sitting member Sharon Claydon insists she is not taking the contest for granted.
The Newcastle Herald sat down for an interview with Ms Claydon at the start of the campaign.
The Herald has also interviewed Greens candidate John Mackenzie.
The Liberal Party candidate Katrina Wark was also approached for an interview. The request was declined, with a Liberal Party respresentative saying,
"Katrina Wark is committed to spending the campaign out in Newcastle, listening to her community".
