Locals win heated ice hockey clash
NEWCASTLE Northstars defeated Sydney Ice Dogs 5-4 in their Australia Ice Hockey League match at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Sunday.
It was a fiery clash and the Northstars and Ice Dogs went toe-to-toe in a penalty-filled game.
The Northstars led 3-nil midway through the second period thanks to goals from Pat Nadin, new import Luke Simpson, and captain Robert Malloy.
"I'm proud of the way we came out," Northstars coach John Kennedy Jr said. "Full credit to the Sydney Ice Dogs and the way they responded after the first period when they were down two goals.
"They weren't going to bow down and let us walk all over them. They came back and fought hard but so did we."
Windred's overseas schedule
LAKE Macquarie golfer Blake Windred, 22, is looking forward to testing himself against the best amateurs in the world. Windred will tee up in the British Amateur, which is being held at Portmarnock, in Ireland, starting June 17. The European Amateur will be held the following week in Austria. After Austria, Windred travels to Houston for an Australian team camp before competing in four tournaments in the US.
