Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad detectives began an investigation in June following reports a girl, 14, had been touched by a male teacher in class.
Investigators arrested a 50-year-old man at a Newcastle home shortly before 2pm on Thursday.
He was taken to Waratah police station and charged with intentionally sexually touching of a child under 16.
Police will allege in court that the man sexually touched the girl when she was 14 during a school class in April this year.
The man received strict conditional bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court.
Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad police are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
Anyone with concerns about suspected child abuse or exploitation should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
